2003 Grant Recipients

For Fiscal Year 2003 (7/1/02—6/30/03) 83 requests were received, totaling over $888,347. Forty-seven grants were awarded totaling $373,435. The following list is organized by Vermont State Team Outcomes:

CHILDREN ARE READY FOR SCHOOL

Chittenden County

Winooski Family Center – Winooski Kindergarten Transition Collaboration $8,296

A preschool enrichment program and coordination with early childhood providers and kindergarten teachers to address readiness.

Franklin County

Swanton Schools – Act III $6,205

The local elementary school will provide leadership in building capacity in the community for all four-year-olds to have access to quality early education experiences. This is in addition to Act I and Act II goals of helping prepare children and families for the transition to kindergarten.

Lamoille County

Cambridge Children’s School – Expansion of Preschool Program $13,088

To expand the preschool program with an 8-week summer camp, tuition scholarships and additional support staff.

Washington County

The Family Center of Washington County – Preschool Extension Pilot $ 5,118

Project extends hours of Family Center Preschool for children ages 3 to 5 years old.

Franklin County

Family Center of Northwest Vermont – Learning Together $15,300

Holistic family support program for young parents and their children.

Franklin County Caring Communities – Missisquoi Mentoring Project $ 9,500

A mentoring program that matches youth with adult mentors.

CHILDREN SUCCEED IN SCHOOL

Chittenden

Colchester High School – TALK $ 8,200

A teacher advisory program to increase the sense of connectedness among students.

New North End Youth Center – Middle School Program $ 7,500

A program to provide support to ESL students and provide drop-in services to middle school youth.

Orleans County

North Country Union J.H. School – Student Assistant Program $ 6,800

A comprehensive SAP program that includes individuals and small group support and intervention as well as on - campus and community outreach.

Rutland County

Clarendon Parent Cooperative Preschool – 2002/03 School Year Partial Teacher $ 5,780

Funding to adequately compensate a qualified teacher in order to provide 2 multi-day preschool sessions for the 2002-03 school year.

Statewide

Everybody Wins! - Vermont $10,000

A literacy and mentoring program dedicated to encouraging positive attitudes about reading in elementary school.

United Children’s Services, Inc. – Unlimited Fathering Opportunities $13,175

A program to strengthen the relationship between men and their children ages 3 to 10.

Chittenden County

Lund Family Center – Parent Education Workshop $ 4,250

A program offering three different parent education workshop series by Louise Dietzel.

Rutland County

Neshobe Family Network – Early Literacy Program $ 4,300

To provide bags with age appropriate books and literacy based activities for families to do with their children.

Caledonia County

Northeast Kingdom Community Action Parent Child Center – Outreach Project $6,725

Early childhood support via playgroups, small wonder groups, home visits and Mother Goose offerings to childcare providers.

Grand Isle County

Champlain Islands Parent-Child Center - Nurturing Growth $10,200

Playgroups and new baby visits to families in the Champlain Islands.

Rutland County

Benson Village School – Beginning with Books $4,988

Books will be given to children in Benson ages birth to school age. Parent information will be distributed through newsletters, literature packets and personal contact.

Windsor County

The Family Place – Hartford Parent-Infant Well- Being $5,025

A parent education program for parents with infants and toddlers.

PREGNANT WOMEN AND NEWBORNS THRIVE

Bennington County

Sunrise Family Resource Center – Pregnant & Parenting Teen $8,508

Provision of information and supports to promote improved health and education outcomes for teen parents.

Orange County

Orange County Parent Child Center – Filling the Cracks $ 8,500

Family support and home visits for all families with young children.

Windsor County

Springfield Area Parent Child Center – Good Beginnings $ 6,425

A home visiting program which provides trained volunteers to support and assist any family who may be expecting or have a newborn baby.

YOUTH CHOOSE HEALTHY BEHAVIORS

Addison County

Boys & Girls Club of Vergennes – Arts for All $7,600

A year - long instructional art program for teens.

People of Addison County Together – Club Scrub $8,775

Support for this Vergennes teen center.

Women Safe Inc, - Healthy Relationships $4,250

An education program for 7th- 12th grade students on healthy relationships.

Caledonia County

St. Johnsbury School – St. Johnsbury Afterschool $9,500

To create healthy and educational activities for students after school daily and to expand a summer program for youth.

Chittenden County

Boys & Girls Club of Burlington – Middle School Expansion Program $9,615

After school programming for middle school youth in Burlington and Winooski.

Burlington Community Schools Project $11,657

After school programs for students of three elementary schools in Burlington.

Linking Learning to Life – Mentors for Kids $6,300

A school based mentoring program for youth in grades K-12.

New North End Youth Center – NNEYC Teen Program $5,058

A drop in program for teens, specific programs for teen girls, employment and service learning opportunities.

Northern VT Chapter, Red Cross – Red Cross Youth Leadership $8,194

Youth leadership training is combined with Red Cross training to give youth access to meaningful volunteer roles and personal leadership and decision making skills.

Winooski Community Justice Center – Summer Program/Tolerance $9,700

A summer recreation program with activities designed to enhance tolerance in a diverse community.

Orange County

Vershare – Vershare Community Camp $4,000

Expanding a free summer camp for local children from 2 to 3 weeks.

Orleans County

Charleston Elementary Schol – Charleston After School $ 8,550

Support for the after school program.

Community Action Youth Services – Teen Council $8,500

An exciting service for teens promoting activities that are fun, but substance free; advocating for teen rights; providing peer mentoring and volunteering in the community.

Orleans Central Supervisory Union – Glover Student Assistance $6,800

A Kindergarten - 8th grade prevention and intervention program.

United Church of Newport – After School Program $7,500

A two-hour after school program for elementary students grades 1-6 on all days school is in full-time session, and a 6-week summer enrichment program.

Rutland County

Rutland Area Prevention Coalition – Work It Out Mentoring Program $8,500

One to one mentoring program using core components to implement community-based mentoring programs for Rutland County.

Washington County

Barre City Police Department – Barre City Police Youth Public Safety Camp $3,217

A summer camp for 6th, 7th and 8th grade youth from Barre. The camp will take place during July 2002.

Cabot Coalition – Cabot Teen Center $7,560

A bi-weekly teen center program.

Harwood Union High School – Harwood Community Network $6,500

Ninth grade community support project to help students choose healthy behaviors and to navigate successfully through their high school years.

Windham County

Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program – Site-Based Mentoring Project $5,000

Provides site-based matches between youth and volunteer mentors. Matches meet one on one, offering youth positive role models, modeling healthy life choices and offering support.

Boys and Girls Club – Get Out $ 8,500

Providing all youth with healthy and exciting activities through a summer, winter and weekend activity project that counters existing unhealthy choices.

Putney Family Services – Oasis $13,900

A prevention program for middle school that provides a place and people for students to go to after school.

Windsor County

Bethel After School Program $12,325

An after school program for children ages 5 to 12.

Springfield School District – Community Buddies Mentoring $9,265

A mentoring program that makes one to one matches.

Statewide

Outright Vermont – Direct Services Programming $8,500

Support services and community building activities for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth.

Green Mountain Prevention Projects – Letting Youth Lead $6,286

A substance abuse prevention program for middle and high school students that focuses on increasing youth involvement and peer leadership opportunities to facilitate youth making healthy choices.
