2004 Grant Recipients

For Fiscal Year 2004 (7/1/03—6/30/04) 95 requests were received, totaling over $1.2 million. Forty-two grants were awarded totaling $353,321. The following list is organized by Vermont State Team Outcomes:

CHILDREN ARE READY FOR SCHOOL

Bennington County

Sunrise Family Resource Center-Opportunity for All: $14,500

Sunrise will provide a comprehensive program for teens, regardless of Reach Up eligibility, to increase the number receiving their high school diplomas.

Chittenden County

Burlington Community School District—Burlington Community Schools Program: $9,408

Second year funding for after school activities at elementary schools in the Old North End.

Burlington Community School District—Burlington Community Schools Project: $9,500

After school enrichment program at three elementary school sites in Burlington in the arts, academics and athletics.

Visiting Nurse Association—Building Blocks: $4,000

This program will teach parents and very young children non-violent conflict resolution and anger management to prevent bullying and subsequent truancy at the elementary school level.

Winooski Family Center—Winooski Kindergarten Transition: $7,052

Preschool enrichment program and coordination with Early Childhood providers and kindergarten teachers to address school readiness.

Statewide

Everybody Wins!—Vermont: $ 8,500

A children's literacy and mentoring program that invites mentors into schools to read with children during the lunch hour. There are ten schools throughout the state participating.

 

CHILDREN LIVE IN STABLE, SUPPORTED FAMILIES

Bennington County

Arlington Area Childcare—Fathertime: $14,500

Fathertime creates ways for fathers and father figures to be involved in their children's lives in positive ways on a consistent basis.

Chittenden County

Burlington Children's Space—Intergenerational Program: $14,367

Educational and recreational activities that will focus on the physical, social, emotional and educational development of its participants. The program will serve the community at large and will be reflective of the ages, socioeconomic status and racial diversity of our community

Lund Family Center—Boot Camp for New Dads: $5,406

An expansion of Lund's Boot Camps for New Dads program by providing supplemental home visits/phone contact, a playgroup for dads and an end of year picnic. Lund Family Center—

Community Parent Education Workshop: $ 3,613

Offering 3 different parents education workshop series by Louise Dietzel at 3 different times and 3 different locations in Chittenden County. Franklin County

The Family Ctr. Of Northwestern Vermont— Replication of the Learning Together: $13,005

This holistic family support and education program will continue to serve young parents and their children at the Family Center.

Lamoille County

Lamoille Family Center—Learning Together Program: $13,500

Learning Together is a holistic, site based, educational, parenting and life skills program for teen mothers and their children 6 weeks to age 3.

Orleans County

NEKCA Parent Child Centers— Northeast Kingdom Parent Child: $18,591

A support program for young parents with young children.

Rutland County

Community Access Program— Building Positive Parenting Skills: $8,030

Community Access plans to hire the consulting firm Shared Ventures to teach a six session parenting class.

Washington County

The Family Ctr. Of Washington County— Infant/Toddler Child Care: $10,864

An on-site infant/toddler childcare program which offers intensive parenting support, modeling and parent education for families enrolled in the childcare program.

Windsor County

The Family Place—Fostering Responsive Caregiving: $10,277

The project will serve families with young children in Hartford and surrounding towns through home visits addressing parenting and child development needs.

PREGNANT WOMEN AND NEWBORNS THRIVE

Bennington County

Sunrise Family Resource Center— Pregnant & Parenting Teens Outreach: $7,232

Sunrise case managers will provide information and support to pregnant and parenting teens in Bennington County in order to improve health and education outcomes.

Grand Isle County

Champlain Islands Parent/Child Center— Nurturing Growth & Development: $8,670

Services will be provided to families who have a newborn, including home visits and playgroups.

Orange County

Orange County Parent/Child Center—Filling the Cracks: $7,225

Family support and home visits for families with young children that are not eligible for other support services.

Windsor County

Springfield Area Parent Child Center— New Infant/Toddler Children's Center:, $11,885

This project will allow the organization to move forward on the development of infant and toddler childcare in No. Springfield.

YOUTH CHOOSE HEALTHY BEHAVIORS

Addison County

Boys & Girls Club of Vergennes—Arts for All: $6,385

Arts for All is a yearlong arts program that will serve teens in the Vergennes area during the afterschool hours.

Caledonia County

St. Johnsbury School— St. Johnsbury After School Program: $7,575

The St. Johnsbury after school program creates healthy alternatives and educational opportunities for students K through 8th grade.

Chittenden County

American Red Cross— Red Cross Youth Leadership Program: $6,889

Youth leadership training is combined with Red Cross training to give youth access to meaningful volunteer roles and personal leadership and decision-making skills.

Boys & Girls Club of Burlington— Middle School After School Program: $7,675

After school programming for middle school youth.

New North End Youth Center—Middle School Program: $6,375

Support to students for whom English is a second language and a drop-in program to middle school youth.

Sara Holbrook Community Center— Middle & High School Girls Group: $9,500

This project will provide two structured support groups to adolescent girls; the New North End Youth Center site will focus on middle school girls, with the Sara Holbrook Center site focusing on high school girls. Curriculum will encompass self-esteem, self-awareness, self-image, healthy lifestyle choices, substance abuse and use and community service.

Franklin County

Enosburg Falls High School— Community Resource Coordinator: $9,500

All students will be served by having a community resource coordinator to link them with community based learning, experience restorative justice options and form community partnerships.

Orange County

Boys & Girls Club of White River Valley— Expanded After School Program: $7,650

An expansion of an already existing after school program to offer a more diversified selection of classes.

Orleans County

Charleston Elementary School— Charleston's After School Program: $7,250

Two 6-week sessions to serve the Charleston student body. Homework clinics and enrichment activities will be included.

Community Action Youth Services—Teen Council: $7,150

An exciting service for teens promoting activities that are fun but substance free, advocating for teen rights, providing peer mentoring and volunteering in the community.

North Country Union Jr. High School— Comprehensive Student Assistance: $5,780

Individuals and small group Student Assistance Program support and intervention on campus and through community outreach.

Rutland County

Boys & Girls Club of Rutland County—SMART Girls: $7,080

The program will teach girls alternative ways of coping with the pressures associated with adolescence. Highlights of the program include drugs/alcohol prevention, abstinence training and health decision making.

RAP Coalition—RAP Mentoring Programs: $7,150

This project supports coordination of 4 mentoring programs in Rutland County.

Washington County

Cabot Coalition—Cabot Teen Center: $5,926

The teen center will provide the opportunity to socialize with peers in a supervised setting.

Cabot Community Association—The HOP: $8,100

An after school program that meets 2 days a week for 6th-9th and 9th-12th grade students at the Cabot gym and cafeteria. Activities, snacks and instruction will be provided.

The Harwood Community Network— Harwood Transition Project: $5,025

This project helps high school students choose healthy behaviors to navigate successfully through their high school years.

Winham County

Big Brothers/Big Sisters— Site-Based Mentoring Project; $4,250

Provides site-based matches between youth and volunteer mentors. Offers youth positive models, modeling healthy life choices and providing friendship and support.

Boys & Girls Club of Brattleboro—Get Out: $4,500

Providing all youth between the ages of 12 and 17 with healthy and exciting activities through a summer and weekend activity project.

Windsor County

Springfield School District— Community Buddies Mentoring Program: $7,875

Placing high school mentors in a one-on-one relationship with elementary students during the after school hours.

Statewide

Green Mountain Prevention Projects—Letting Youth Lead: $5,343

This is a substance abuse prevention program for middle and high school students that focuses on increasing youth involvement and peer leadership opportunities to facilitate youth making healthy choices.

Outright Vermont—Direct Services Programming: $6,718

Support services and community building activities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer, questioning and allied youth under age 22.

Vermont CARES—Community Education and Speakers: $9,500

The community education and speaker's bureau program is a collaboration with Vermont schools and youth organizations to provide vital HIV prevention education and personal stories of living with HIV to groups of students in their classrooms.
