2005 Grant Recipients

For Fiscal Year 2005 (7/1/04—6/30/05) 86 requests were received, totaling over $902,000. Forty-four grants were awarded totaling $378,781. The following list is organized by Vermont State Team Outcomes:

CHILDREN ARE READY FOR SCHOOL

Bennington County

Sunrise Family Resource Center—Opportunity for All: $12,325

Sunrise will provide a comprehensive educational program, including work experience placement, for pregnant and parenting teens.

Chittenden County

Colchester School District—Second Step Violence Prevention: $2,466

Union Memorial School students in grades kindergarten through 2 nd grade will receive the Second Step Violence prevention skills training during the school year.

Winooski Family Center—Preschool Enrichment Program: $5,994

This program will provide coordination with early childhood providers and kindergarten teachers to address school readiness.

Lamoille County

Cambridge Children’s School—Expansion of Preschool Program: $11,125

Continued expansion of the preschool program.

Windsor County

Chelsea Family Center, Inc.—Building a Patch in Chelsea , VT: $10,000

An active “Patch” will be created at the Family Center to serve families of Hillside Housing and the larger community. The Patch site will bring services to these families that typically are only available in the larger towns and cities in the area.

The Family Place—Fostering Responsive Caregiving: $8,735

The project will serve families with young children in Hartford , Hartland, Bridgewater , Woodstock , Sharon , Norwich and Royalton through home visits addressing parenting and child development issues.

Statewide

Everybody Wins!—Vermont: $ 7,225

A children’s literacy and mentoring program that invites mentors into schools to read with children during the lunch hour. There are nine schools throughout the state participating in Everybody Wins!: Barre, Barton, Burlington , Hartland, Middlebury, Montpelier , Rutland , White River Junction and Winooski.

CHILDREN LIVE IN STABLE, SUPPORTED FAMILIES

Bennington County

Arlington Area Childcare—Fathertime: $12,325

Fathertime designs and implements programs for fathers/father figures and their children (ages4-12) to spend time together in positive ways as a means of enhancing their relationship.

Chittenden County

Burlington Children’s Space—Intergenerational Program: $12,211

Participants will come from the community at large and will be reflective of the ages, socioeconomic status and racial diversity of our community. Services will occur in the McClure Multi-Generational Center and within the community.

Lund Family Center—Boot Camp for New Dads: $4,595

Expand and enhance Lund ’s existing Boot Camp for New Dads Program by providing supplemental home visits/phone contact to dads who request it, a playgroup for dads, an end-of-the-year group picnic, and parenting workshops geared towards fathers.

Visiting Nurse Association—Supporting New American Children: $16,000

The Family Room will provide comprehensive, collaborative literacy and parenting education to New Americans.

Franklin County

The Family Ctr. Of Northwestern Vermont—Learning Together Child Care Program: $2,500

The Learning Together Child Care Program will provide a nurturing, developmentally appropriate early learning environment for the infants and toddlers of young parents involved in attaining their personal, educational, and parenting goals.

Orleans County

Orleans/Northern Essex Early Childhood Council—Empowering Parents: $13,124

“Empowering Parents” provides year-round parenting classes that target a comprehensive array of parenting stages and issues. Parents of children from pre-birth through teen years will be served in Newport , Lake Region and Canaan . Classes specifically for dads, teens, and stepfamilies are included.

Rutland County

Community Access Program—Building Positive Parenting Skills: $6,825

Community Access will hire the consulting firm Shared Ventures to teach a six session parenting class, teach a six-week Adlerian theory class to child and family case managers, and provide 1:1 consultation and follow-up to families and case managers.

Washington County

Prevent Child Abuse Vermont—Education/Support for Deaf Parents: $13,500

In collaboration with Deaf Victims Advocacy Services, Prevent Child Abuse Vermont will offer group parent education and support to the Vermont deaf community. A professional from Deaf Victims Advocacy Services will facilitate 3 groups, one in Montpelier , one in Burlington and one in Brattleboro .

The Family Ctr. Of Washington County—Infant/Toddler Child Care: $9,234

On-site infant/toddler childcare program which offers intensive parenting support, modeling and parent education.

PREGNANT WOMEN AND NEWBORNS THRIVE

LamoilleCounty

The LamoilleFamilyCenter—The Learning Together Program: $10,901

Learning Together is a holistic, site-based, educational parenting and life skills program for teen mothers and their children ages 6 weeks to 3 years. Participants have dropped out of school or are at risk of dropping out. The goals are high school graduation, successful parenting, healthy children and a plan for life after graduation.

Windsor County

SpringfieldAreaParentChildCenter—New Infant/Toddler Children’s Center: $10,102

This project will continue the development of infant and toddler childcare in North Springfield. It will serve the public, with first priority being children of young parents in the on-site program.

Washington County

WashingtonCounty Youth Service Bureau—Bright Smiles: $15,977

Twenty teen mothers and 18 children, as well as 150 junior high and high school students will improve their oral hygiene and dental health.

YOUTH CHOOSE HEALTHY BEHAVIORS

Addison County

Lincoln Community School—Project Newsletter/Project Garden: $4,400

These two projects will serve the students of Lincoln Community School. The projects will be based primarily at our school with trips to community gardens and farms.

Bennington County

Burdett Commons, Inc.—Full Circle Youth Project: $9,200

This project will benefit youth of Arlington, Sandgate and Sunderland through education concerning risky behaviors and participation in activities that are designed to build assets that have shown to decrease risky behaviors.

Caledonia County

AWARE—This is Your Brain on Television: $15,900

“This is Your Brain on Television,” a children’s book and curriculum developed by AWARE, to teach media literacy skills to elementary students so that they will understand the health effects and be able to consciously choose which media they consume. The program will occur at five elementary schools within AWARE’s service area.

Chittenden County

Boys & Girls Club of Burlington—Middle School After School Program: $6,524

After school programming for middle school youth in Burlington and Winooski.

Burlington School District—Burlington Community Schools Program: $7,997
Burlington School District—Burlington Community Schools Program: $8,075

After school enrichment in arts, academics and athletics at all Burlington elementary schools: Barnes, Champlain, Edmunds, Flynn and Wheeler.

New North End Youth Center—Middle School Program: $5,419

Provide academic support and drop-in service to all middle school aged youth living in the new and old north end of Burlington.

Sara Holbrook Community Center—Girls Group (aka Ladies Nite Out): $8,075

This project provides two structured support groups to adolescent girls—one at the SHCC site and one at the NNEYC site. Curriculum encompasses self-esteem, self-image, self-awareness, healthy lifestyle choices, and community service.

The Essex Teen Center—After School Program: $10,382

Expansion and improvement of after-school programming for middle school youth in the greater Essex community through on- and off-site events and education about social and recreational alternatives to unstructured and risky behavior.

Franklin County

Enosburg Falls High School—Community Resource Coordinator: $8,075

All students will be able to link with community based learning experiences, restorative justice, options and community partners as part of the Enosburg Falls High School programs.

Fairfield Community Center Association—After School Program: $8,000

An after school program to meet the needs of the 40 children from Fairfield and East Fairfield. Our mission is to meet the ever-changing needs of families and individuals by providing social, peer support, and educational programs for all ages in a safe, caring, and nurturing environment.

Franklin Recreation and Activities Program—Franklin RAP Positive Youth Dev.: $2,000

This project will serve ages 12-17 in the Town of Franklin. Activities will take place at Franklin Center School, the Town Hall, and at field sites that include movie houses, museums, and other locations to be determined by the interest of the teens involved.

St. Albans Teen Center—St. Albans Teen Center : $5,000

An after school teen center program that serves ages 12-18 years. Services will occur in the teen center, are open to all students of Franklin County, and will foster healthy choices.

Orange County

Boys & Girls Club of White River Valley—After School Programming: $6,503

The Boys & Girls Club of White River Valley will continue the expansion of after school programming. Programs will occur in Bradford, Northfield, Randolph and Brookfield. The project will serve youth in grades one through six in all of these communities.

Orleans County

ONE Supv. Union/North Country Union Jr. HS—Don’t Laugh at Me: $6,671

120 teachers will receive training in implementation of the “Don’t Laugh at Me” curriculum which helps sensitize students to the painful effects of bullying and disrespect, and gives them the tools necessary to take responsibility for making schools ridicule free. 1,030 students will experience the curriculum throughout the school year.

Washington County

Battered Women’s Services and Shelter—Youth Program & Peer Advocacy: $10,000

Support for a primary prevention and educational outreach program to raise awareness of domestic and dating violence among teens in Washington County.

The Plainfield Teen Center: $9,100

Support for a community teen center that serves 12-19 year olds that are in grades 7-12. Activities and programs give teens the opportunity to interact with each other and the community.

Windham County

Big Brothers/Big Sisters—Site-Based Mentoring Project: $3,612

This program serves youth in Windham County with volunteer mentors who provide role modeling in healthy behaviors and life choices. Mentoring takes place in supervised settings weekly throughout the school year, and continues over the summer months.

Pathways for Youth—Pathways Computer Upgrade: $2,000

Project is computer upgrade for organization. Three new desktop computers will be available to center participants during center operating hours. One new desktop computer and a laptop computer will be for staff/office use and will increase the efficiency of the organization.

Pathways for Youth—Pathways Outreach Initiative: $15,600

Trained outreach workers will establish relationships with youth ages 14-20 to determine what they need and assist them in accessing available services, helping them pursue healthy behaviors. The services will occur in both formal and informal environments in Windham County, such as schools, parking lots and hangout centers.

Windsor County

Boys & Girls Club of Springfield—Get Out!: $10,000

A thirty-three day summer and school vacation program for middle and high school age youth which involves field trips out of town as well as fun learning activities locally such as web and computer graphics design, drama, dance and rock climbing.

Statewide

Green Mountain Prevention Projects—Letting Youth Lead: $4,540

“Letting Youth Lead” enhances opportunities for youth involvement in substance abuse prevention in order to further develop leadership skills. The program will directly serve approximately 75 youth, staff and 20 adult volunteers from throughout Vermont.

Northern VT Chapter American Red Cross—Youth Leadership Wilderness Retreat: $5,779

Youth leadership training is combined with Red Cross training to give youth access to meaningful volunteer roles and personal leadership and decision-making skills. Youth ages 11-18 will be served in counties including Addison, Caledonia, Chittenden, Essex, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille and Orleans.

Vermont CARES—Community Education and Speakers: $8,075

This program shares basic information about HIV and AIDS, as well as HIV prevention skills, with adolescents in and out of school.
